The Coronado Islands are a group of four islands off the northwest coast of the Mexican state
of Baja California. The islands are largely unfertile and uninhabited except for a small military
detachment and a few lighthouse keepers. The islands are often visible from San Diego but are
owned by Mexico. The water temperature is usually a few degrees warmer than immediately off the
coast of San Diego, the visibility is much better (often >60'!) There is an amazing amount of
marine life off the islands, but a surprising absence of giant kelp.
